What defensible space means
California requires clearance around structures in fire hazard areas, and Marin fire districts inspect for it. The zones are measured out from the house: the first few feet want nothing that can catch an ember, the closer band wants dead material and ladder fuels gone, and the outer band is thinned rather than stripped. It is not clear-cutting — the aim is to break the path a fire would use to climb from the ground into the canopy and across to the building.
What we actually do
Dead limbs and dead brush out. Ladder fuels — the low growth that lets fire climb into the crown — cut back. Limbs lifted off the roofline and away from the chimney. Overhanging branches reduced. Dead fronds off palms. Debris chipped and hauled so the fuel is gone rather than piled.
If you have an inspection notice
Bring it out when we come look. The notice tells us what your district flagged, and we can quote against that list rather than guessing. We will also tell you if something on the notice does not need to come out.
Timing
Best done in late winter and spring, before things dry out and before inspections come round. It is also quieter work for the trees than cutting in the heat.

Are estimates really free?
Yes. We come out, look at the tree, and give you a written price. There is no charge and no obligation to book.
Is cleanup included?
Always. We chip the brush on site, rake the ground, and haul the debris off. It is part of the job, not an add-on.
Do you handle the permit?
Yes. Some Marin towns require a permit for protected or heritage trees. We can handle that side of it — tell us when we come out and we will let you know whether your tree needs one.
How far out are you booking?
It depends on the season and the size of the job. We will tell you a realistic date when we quote rather than promising one we cannot hold. Emergencies jump the queue.
